Crime Prevention Tips for Businesses
- When opening your business, two people should participate whenever possible. One person enters and makes a search and gives a rearranged signal that all is well.
- Windows should allow a clear and unobstructed view of the interior of the store. (This may mean sacrificing some less important advertising).
- All unguarded exits should be locked from outside entry, allowing exit by a panic bar with an audible alarm system. This will also help in preventing employee theft.
- Proper illumination is required in the interior, as well as, the exterior and parking areas.
- The name and address of the business owner should not be placed on the door or windows. Put the name of the alarm company there instead!
- It can be anticipated that armed robberies will occur if incoming cash receipts or other monies are allowed to accumulate in an unprotected area.
- Businesses can minimize losses by making frequent deposits.
- If bank deposits are made by store personnel, the buddy system should be used. Remember to make deposits at different times and during daylight hours whenever possible.
- Petty cash must always be kept at a minimum.
- It is desirable to have managers purge cash from the registers as needed during business hours.
- It is generally inadvisable for cash to be counted under public observation at the individual cash registers.
- Many criminals readily admit that they were motivated to commit a robbery after seeing unnecessary displays of cash.
- It is a good policy to stamp all incoming checks "For Deposit Only" as soon as they are received.
- A silent holdup alarm should be strategically placed in cash receiving areas.
- Emergency numbers such as police, fire, ambulance and alarm companies should be conveniently placed on the auto dialer of your telephone.
- Advanced planning is the key to business safety.
- In an emergency, dial 911 for police, fire or ambulance service
