LATENT FINGERPRINT ID'S CLEAR 19 CASES

The Brookline Police Department, which consists of approximately 140 sworn officers, has a detective unit staffed by 17 dedicated professionals. When a patrol officer responds to a crime scene, he or she makes a determination as to whether or not there is a chance that the scene can be processed for evidence left behind, and calls for a follow-up investigation by our detective unit if it is likely to be beneficial. The detective unit serves as "CSI" for the department and is responsible for processing crime scenes, gathering evidence, and lifting prints in addition to its investigatory and intelligence functions. Preliminary work is conducted by a detective in the field who submits potential fingerprint evidence to the Brookline Police Identification Unit. Evidence is prepared and processed by Detectives Larry Crapo and Justin O'Kane, who are specially trained as Latent Fingerprint Examiners.

In the past six months, eight suspects have been identified by Crapo and O'Kane, clearing 19 cases of residential and commercial breaking and entering, malicious damage, larcenies from motor vehicles and similar related offenses in the Town of Brookline. Through diligent police work, successful collaborations with the Boston and State Police Departments and the use some of the latest forensic technology available, suspects have primarily been identified by fingerprints left behind at crime scenes and found on recovered property. The Brookline Police Department is extremely proud of the work that its officers and detectives perform in an effort to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for the citizens of the Town of Brookline.

Residents of the Town of Brookline who wish to learn more about the Brookline Police Department's practices and services are invited to participate in the next Citizen's Police Academy, which will begin Thursday September 23, 2004. In addition to criminal and forensic investigation, students will learn about defensive tactics, patrol procedures, domestic violence, and crime prevention. Students will also participate in a ride-along, mock trial and firearms training simulation. To request an application, please call Officer Canney at (617) 730-2787, or email: Jen_Canney@town.brookline.ma.us.
